Kaze-no-Oka Crematorium by Maki and Associates →
From Fumihiko Maki’s website:
“Kaze-no-Oka Crematorium has a fluid appearance that blends smoothly with the surrounding ancient burial mound and cemetery. Starting with the building approach, transitional spaces are emphasized; each ceremonial function space (funeral hall, cemetery, and waiting lounge) is kept at a specific distance from the next to allow for pause and reflection....

POTENTIAL SITE # 3: Along the Gardiner
Another site in consideration at the moment is a commonly viewed building along the GARDINER EXPRESSWAY. I thought maybe I could use a portion of the Expressway since the city has many plans for it (closing it or demolishing it or turning it into, what I see, as Toronto’s version of New York’s High Line - http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/652918) but I don’t think that...

POTENTIAL SITE # 2: The Lower Bay Station & The...
In my research, I came across the London Necropolis Railway Station(enter it in the search engine to find the post). The station was a feature in the British city that provided a subway service for coffins and mourners that brought them to Brookwood Cemetery, which was 25 miles away. It was convenient for people and came out of a need for hygienic spaces for death. It is now out of service.

Dying To Move In: Cemetery Skyscrapers →
We discovered Italian Dumas from BLDG blog. We subscribed and found something quite interesting—the vertical cemetery. That’s right. The internment of loved ones in condominium style buildings is evidently sweeping Brazil and spreading.
The Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica III, a vertical cemetery in Santos, Brazil (above) is the world’s tallest cemetery, with burial spaces on 32 floors. There’s...

THE BASICS: A NOTE ON SITE SELECTION (AND SOME...
Although I haven’t been given the complete brief and guideline from my professors about site selection, I just felt that there is something I needed to get out there: because my program is NOT an architectural program, for our thesis (as ED students) we have to choose an existing building and basically reuse it to adapt to our thesis and our needs. Some students in past years chose a site...

POTENTIAL SITE # 1: Toronto Underground PATH... →
Part 2 of this potential site involves this church found in the middle of downtown Toronto, tucked right by the Eaton’s Centre (a large shopping centre). Surrounding it are two heritage buildings and a small square (Bell - Trinity Square).
I’m not sure if the PATH System can somehow be “moled” as to be connected to this area. And although the subject of religion and...

POTENTIAL SITE # 1: Toronto Underground PATH... →
One option is to reuse the TORONTO UNDERGROUND PATH SYSTEM or a portion of it, and transform it into this subterranean world for the dead. This site would be good because it is in the heart of the downtown core, and many of the entrances and exits dotted around the city, allowing for a widespread, constant, (and subtle?) reminder of mortality. However, I am unsure about this site choice because I...

THE BASICS: SITE POSSIBILITIES
My last year at ocad officially starts in 2 weeks. For the summer, however, we were encouraged by our professors to continue doing research and preparing ourselves for it. One of the things we had to keep in mind was where the physical manifestation of our project would be - our site. They encouraged us to stay in Toronto because we (themselves and the rest of the students) know more about the...

THE BASICS: THESIS IDEA & PROPOSITION
*OY, THIS IS GOING TO BE A BIT LONG SINCE I’M TOO LAZY TO EDIT AND SHORTEN OUT WHAT I WROTE IN MY THESIS BOOKLET LAST YEAR. COPY AND PASTE!
Surrounded by the concrete ribbons of highway that the Georgetown GO bus traverses each night, there is a piece of land that has been fenced off. Through the panes of glass from the bus, and through the rusting chain-link fence, I see a cemetery that...

THE BASICS: MY PROGRAM

Honeycomb Latticework by Swarovski →
A cut crystal, when light falls on it, gleams radiantly in the honeycomb structure on a wall or ceiling. Architecture, light and crystal appear to unite in a fully new way. The extraordinary combination of materials blends completely into the architecture and attracts the glances of the viewers.

Tanatorio Municipal de Leon / BAAS →
The building is conceived as a tomb of tombs.
A completely buried construction, it eludes its volume and its signification in order to camouflage itself in the interstices of a too-close residential area. A sheet of water by way of a roof constitutes the single facade, reflecting León’s sky like an allegory of death. All that emerges from the water are mysterious fingers in search of light for...

GLOFAB GLOWING TEXTILES →
Torbjorn Lundell has just launched a new light-emitting textile at the 2006 Stockholm Furniture Fair called GloFab. This is such a fabulous idea it makes you wonder why this development has taken so long. It has always seemed to me like it should be pretty straightforward to weave fiber-optic cables into textiles, and then pump light through those cables to create a radiant fabric. Apparently,...
PARANS SUNLIGHT TRANSPORT SYSTEM →
When I first saw discovered this amazing technology, I instantly wondered why no one has come up with a sunlight transport device before. The technology has been around for awhile, and the idea is so fabulous, you would think we would all have these in our homes by now. Swedish company Parans has developed a system of rooftop solar panels that collect sunlight and then transport it via fiber...
